Bowen Yang Opens Up About Staying on SNL

Comedian Bowen Yang has confirmed that he will continue his journey on Saturday Night Live (SNL) after nearly stepping away from the sketch comedy show. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the 34-year-old star revealed that SNL creator Lorne Michaels played a key role in convincing him to remain on the show.

Yang admitted he was unsure whether the audience still connected with his work, but Michaels reassured him otherwise. “Lorne told me, ‘You have more to do. I need you,’” Bowen shared. “That means a lot, because this show has completely changed my life.”

A Bittersweet Return Amid Departures

While Yang is returning for Season 6, several cast members—including Devon Walker, Emil Wakim, Michael Longfellow, Heidi Gardner, and Ego Nwodim—have announced their departures. Reflecting on this, Bowen said, “It’s bittersweet because many of my friends are moving on. But SNL has always been a launching pad. I’m excited to see what they do next.”

He also praised the show’s environment, describing it as a “boot camp” for performers. “Whether you stay or move on, SNL helps you grow. Even Kenan Thompson, who’s been there the longest, has used it to expand his career.”

Looking Ahead with Gratitude

The Wicked star acknowledged that his decision to remain on SNL is about embracing the unknown. “I like having no road map. Sometimes you’re ready for the challenge, sometimes you aren’t, but that’s what makes it exciting,” he explained.

Bowen concluded by expressing deep appreciation for the people he works with: “That man [Lorne Michaels] has changed my life. I love working with the cast and crew. They are the best.”
