Ryan Reynolds Confronts Journalist Over John Candy Remarks in New Documentary

At the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, Ryan Reynolds opened up about a conversation he had with a journalist who made offensive comments about the late comedy legend John Candy.

Reynolds, while working on the documentary John Candy: I Like Me with director Colin Hanks, discovered footage of journalists mocking Candy’s appearance. Initially, they considered including it in the film but later decided to remove it.

“There were many things we left out, including journalists saying stuff. I called one of them just to see,” Reynolds told the audience during a career discussion.

He emphasized that his goal was not to shame the journalist. “I told him I took it out of the movie, but I’d put it in if he wanted to talk about it—maybe share his journey about something like that,” Reynolds said. “We had such a thoughtful conversation.”

The documentary does include interviews with journalists asking derogatory questions, but also highlights Candy’s witty and humorous responses.
